NC State Health Plans and NCFlex Benefits Programs
Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ is committed to supporting your health, well-being, and long-term financial wellness, offering a comprehensive benefits program to guide you every step of the way. Employees can access medical, dental, and vision plans, along with supplemental programs to support your everyday life.
Our medical plans include two PPO options and a High Deductible Health Plan, all designed to provide flexibility in choosing providers and opportunities to reduce out-of-pocket costs through wellness incentives and in-network care.
NCFlex benefit programs offer a variety of supplemental benefits, including dental, vision, flexible spending accounts, accident, critical illness, cancer, and TRICARE supplement coverage. These programs are designed to give employees flexibility, financial protection, and opportunities to save through pre-tax contributions and wellness incentives.
Retirement options include the Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System (TSERS), the Optional Retirement Program (ORP/TIAA), and supplemental savings plans.
Explore the details of each plan below to find the options that best meet your needs.
Note: CVS Caremark is our pharmacy benefit manager; you are not required to purchase your prescriptions from CVS.  You may continue to use the pharmacy of your choice.
Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ employees (SHRA and EHRA) have access to medical coverage through the State Health Plan of North Carolina, administered by Aetna. The University contributes toward the monthly premium for regular full-time employees. All plans give you the freedom to choose any provider, though using in-network providers helps reduce your out-of-pocket costs. Two Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) options are available, and one High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) option provides lower premiums with a health savings account (HSA) to help manage out-of-pocket costs.
Base PPO Plan (70/30)
Offers freedom to choose any provider. In-network care reduces out-of-pocket costs, and preventive services are covered at 100%. Copays and coinsurance apply for office visits, specialists, and major services. Members can lower their premium through a wellness premium credit and reduce copays by using CPP providers.
Enhanced PPO Plan (80/20)
Similar to the 70/30 PPO, with lower copays and coinsurance for office visits, specialists, and major services. Preventive care is fully covered in-network. Employees can lower their premium by completing the tobacco attestation and reduce costs further by using CPP providers.
High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP)
Offers flexibility to choose any provider with lower in-network costs after meeting a higher deductible. Preventive services are covered at 100% in-network. Maintaining a Primary Care Provider is recommended to manage care and access wellness incentives. Out-of-network care is covered at a lower benefit level.
Tip: Using in-network providers, taking advantage of wellness activities, and visiting CPP providers can help lower your out-of-pocket costs across all plans.
Through MetLife, NCFlex offers three dental plan options that cover routine checkups and other dental care: the High Option plan, the Classic Option plan, and the Low Option plan. These options differ both in how much you pay per pay period and at time of service.
Note: Your username and password will be the same information you use to access your Ä¢¹½´«Ã½ computer/email or OnePort login.
Choosing the Right Dental Option
| Plan | Description |
|---|---|
| Low Option | You only need basic preventive and wellness coverage and prefer a lower premium. |
| Classic Option | You want coverage for major services (crowns, dentures) or orthodontia for children, but do not need the highest level of coverage (and want to avoid the higher premium of the High Option). |
| High Option | You need the highest level of coverage for basic and major services, want a higher annual maximum, and are comfortable paying the higher premium. |
NCFlex offers vision coverage through EyeMed Vision Care to save money on eye exams and eyewear. You can see any vision provider you choose. The Vision Plan offers three options: Core, Basic, and Enhanced.
| Plan | What’s Covered | Monthly Premium – Employee Only | Monthly Premium – Employee + Family |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core Wellness Exam* | Annual eye exam with a $20 copay. Available at no cost if you enroll. | No charge | N/A |
| Basic | Comprehensive eye exam and benefits for vision materials (choose either eyeglass lenses or contacts). | $4.50 | $11.66 |
| Enhanced | Higher level of benefits for vision materials plus comprehensive eye exam. | $8.00 | $20.52 |
*To participate in the Core Wellness Exam at no cost, you must still enroll in the plan. Both the Basic and Enhanced options provide a full exam and vision materials but do not allow both eyeglasses and contact lenses in the same benefit period.

You can choose a maximum benefit amount of $15,000, $25,000, or $40,000. Benefits are paid directly to you to use however you like. You do not have to provide evidence of good health/insurability to enroll in this plan.

NCFlex offers an Accident Plan that pays you cash benefits for specific injuries and events resulting from a covered accident that occurs on or after your coverage effective date. Benefits are paid directly to you and pay in addition to any other insurance you may have. You can choose between two plan options: the Classic Option and the Enhanced Option.
