Welcome to University Police

University Police is available 24/7 at (828) 232-5000, and 911 should be used for off-campus emergencies. The university urges prompt reporting of all crimes or suspected criminal activity, and any on-campus emergencies should be reported directly to University Police.

Reporting crimes helps ensure incidents are properly documented, included in crime statistics, and may prompt campus-wide crime alerts. University Police can also connect individuals with appropriate agencies, local services, or the University Care and Crisis Team, which is available 24/7.

All Ģý Police incident reports involving students are forwarded to the Dean of Students for review and possible action by the Office of Residential Education.

By registering identifying information for your property (such as the serial number or owner applied number), in the unfortunate circumstance that an item is stolen, you will have the necessary info for the responding law enforcement agency to enter the property as stolen in the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database. Once entered, if a pawn shop or any police agency in the country finds your item they will be notified it is stolen, secure it, and return it to you. It is critical that stolen items be entered in a timely manner.

Reporting Student Conduct

Any member of the Ģý community can fill out an incident report, whether you believe a policy or law has been broken or an incident has happened which should be documented. Filling out an incident report does not necessarily mean that someone will get into trouble or go through the Citizenship Education process, it simply goes to the appropriate personnel for further investigation.

Clery Act Compliance

At Ģý we publish a combined Security & Fire Report which includes information on fire safety policies and statistics for the past three calendar years. Federal law requires schools make the reports available to all current students and employees, and prospective students and employees must be notified of its existence and given a copy upon request

Clery Compliance Info

Ģý has specific requirements intended to help us keep our students and employees informed about threats to their safety and health in a manner that allows them to protect themselves. Below reflects the differences between emergency notifications, timely warnings, and crime alerts and the distinction between each type.

Emergency Notification

Ģý is committed to ensuring the campus community receives timely, accurate, and useful information in the event of a significant emergency or dangerous situation on campus or in the community that poses an immediate threat to the health and safety of campus community members.

Ģý Police and/or other campus first responders may become aware of a critical incident or other emergency that potentially affects the health and/or safety of the campus community. Generally, campus first responders become aware of these situations when they are reported to the UNCA Police or upon discovery during regular patrols and other assignments.

Emergency alerts can be initiated by a broad range of situations. Once designated university officials confirm the existence ofany significant emergency or dangerous situation that potentially affects the health and/or safety of the campus communitythey will send out an emergency alert.

In the event of a significant emergency or dangerous situation, Ģý will: (1) confirm the existence of a significant emergency or dangerous situation; (2) determine the appropriate segment or segments of the campus community to notify; (3) determine the content of the emergency notification; and (4) initiate the emergency notification system.

Timely Warning

In the event of a report of a Clery Act crime on Clery Act geography that constitutes a serious or ongoing threat to members of the campus community, a campus-wide timely warning will be issued to all students and employees. At Ģý, the timely warning is called aTimely Warning.A Timely Warning intends to aid in the prevention of similar crimes by helping members of the community protect themselves.

The University encourages anyone with information regarding criminal activity that may warrant a Timely Warning to immediately report the circumstances to University Police.

Safety Notice

University Police issueSafety Notices(previously called “Crime Alerts”) to increase public awareness and/or elicit information about safety and security concerns. Safety Notices inform the community of potential risks that may affect the campus or surrounding community.Safety notices are sent to the campus community for crimes that do not occur within UNCA Clery geography, or forsituations that occur with the UNCA Clery geography that are not deemed an emergency and are sent for campus awareness.
